Totoweka jade refers to a rare, variety of New Zealand’s pounamu (greenstone), named from the Māori words for “blood” “Toto” and “Weka” (a native bird). These red iron oxide streaks or dots are thought to resemble the Weka’s blood and make the stone highly prized.
