Matau in Te Reo Māori Means fish hook and Hei indicates that the Matau (fish hook) hangs around the neck. Hei Matau is also associated with the myth of Maui, who used a hook to lift the North Island from the moana (sea) and carries spiritual significance in Māori culture.
