An extraordinary example of New Zealand Totoweka greenstone with tones of greens, reds and in this case swirling blue jade. Unique Pounamu sourced on whanau (family) land in the Nelson/Marlborough rohe (area). A depiction of the toki (adze) from the archaic period where notching might have been used by Tohunga (Māori spiritual leaders) to aid in recitation of whakapapa (genealogy). This is a fundamental concept in Māori culture tracing of whanau (family) lines as well as a connection to all things in the world, both tangible and spiritual.
