Description
Whakatu/Nelson is known for its rich deposits of nephrite jade and is valued in Māori culture as taonga (treasure). These kapeu are a great example of jade sourced in the Nelson/Marlborough rohe (area) with a kaleidoscope of greens and light blue.
Kapeu are not gender specific, the Chief featured on the New Zealand coat of arms wears a kapeu. They are highly prized and considered a sign of leadership with the ability to provide and protect in Māori society.
