Description

This piece is a iti porowhita pounamu a small disc with a lens creating a hidden landscape when light is directed into it showcasing the beauty of Totoweka jade.

Beautiful Totoweka jade with tones of green and red is sourced in a tributary up the Aniseed Valley Tasman, South Island, New Zealand. Totoweka jade refers to a rare, variety of New Zealand’s pounamu (greenstone), named from the Māori words for “blood” “Toto” and “Weka” (a native bird). These red iron oxide streaks or dots are thought to resemble the Weka’s blood and make the stone highly prized.

Porowhita” is a circle and in Māori culture, the porowhita is a powerful symbol for the never-ending cycle of life and nature, representing continuous renewal, interconnectedness, and the infinite journey of existence.
