Onewa Porowhita

Description
Onewa Porowhita, greywacke is gathered from the Waimiha Awa. This porowhita embodies connection, balance, and the continuous journey of life. The circular form represents unity, wholeness, and the enduring bonds between place, people, and whakapapa. Greywacke is one of New Zealand’s most common natural stones formed over millions of years and found throughout Aotearoa. While abundant, only a small percentage possesses the strength, density, and character required for carving. This particular stone was carefully selected for its exceptional quality, allowing it to be shaped and polished into a lasting taonga. Its natural charcoal grey tones and subtle texture reflect the river from which it came from, making every piece unique. Suspended by a hand-braided cord, this purāpita is a meaningful, everyday taonga that carries the story of the awa and the whenua.
